Cancer Misdiagnosis Compensation Claims

Services surrounding the treatment and diagnosis of cancer have been significantly improved in the UK over the past couple of decades, but in some cases there are still patients being wrongly diagnosed, which can have severe consequences for both themselves and their families.

There are so many different types of cancer, which are common in adults and it can be very tricky to get the correct diagnosis. Much will depend on the abilities of the medical team to recognise your symptoms and interpret the results of your tests correctly. In some cases people have been told they have a cancer when actually they don't, which can lead to bouts of depression and anxiety, which is very unpleasant to go through.

The other scenario is more serious. A patient who is suffering with cancer but receives an all clear following tests can lead to extended periods with no treatment for the condition. This is obviously life threatening and can impede the success of the cancer treatments when the condition is later diagnosed correctly. For the sufferer, it is not only extending the period in which they have to tolerate the symptoms of a cancer in their body, but it is also potentially reducing their life expectancy and the likelihood of the cancer becoming untreatable.

The Right to Compensation

If you or someone you know has been misdiagnosed, then you should be looking to seek compensation from the medical body responsible for your treatment. Whilst this is not necessarily the first thing on a sufferer's mind when this happens, seeking compensation for the misdiagnosis will not only help you financially to deal with the fallout from your situation, but will also highlight the negligent people responsible for the mistake and ensure the correct procedures and training are put in place to avoid it happening again.

As an example, breast cancer is a fairly common cancer affecting women who are usually over the age of 50. However, it also affects a proportion of the population who are under this age and, unfortunately, this is where misdiagnoses can occur. Non-invasive cancers can often be retreated through a simple operation to remove the affected breast tissue, but the speed at which diagnosis takes place is essential to the success of this operation. A late diagnosis may mean the cancer can turn invasive and affect other tissues of the body before any treatment can take place, diminishing the likelihood of treatment success and lessening the chances of survival.
